I have been working at University of Maine System full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great benefits, one of the largest employers in the state, security, working with various and diverse population, most have security of a union.

    Cons

Promotion from within is almost impossible. Senior management sometimes has interesting directives which trickle down to lower levels. Firing people is nearly impossible with the unions, so some employees that should have been thrown out years ago keep hanging on to their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is Maine's public university system. Our #1 goal is to be a higher education resource for our state and local communities, and a place for our highly educated folks to give back to the system as employees. Continually searching from the outside in for students, staff, and faculty doesn't give Mainer's a fair chance.

I worked at University of Maine System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There is a lot of teacher student interaction since this is a smaller public University. Some of the Professors are very knowledgeable and great teachers if you work with the right ones.

    Cons

Being in Maine it is hard to get recognized outside of the state. Having a small budget makes it difficult to experience some things that other larger Universities may offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Department should have TA's perform more additional tasks in order to free up more of the Professor's time.
