Former Employee - Staff Nurse  in  Baltimore, MD
Former Employee - Staff Nurse in Baltimore, MD

Pros

Really awesome doctors, nurses, etc. High acuity patients from all over the region. Accommodating to school or family obligations. Culture of excellence.

Cons

It could feel unsafe walking to and from parking. Some of the patient care techs were knowledgeable, hard-working, good people, but those that weren't made life very unpleasant for patients and fellow staff, and management turned a blind eye.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require continuing education from nurses. Require nurses to cross train on other units if you are going to ask them to float there.

Current Employee - Medical Technologist II  in  Baltimore, MD
Current Employee - Medical Technologist II in Baltimore, MD

    Pros

UMMS is a large established company, medical benefits are good, enjoyable orientation program, lots of available overtime and substituting opportunities in departments other than the one you were hired for.

    Cons

Horribly understaffed (budget related) leading to pressure to work 60 hours plus per week. Required to fill in and cover for jobs not properly trained for. The lack of staff in all departments leads to lots of turnover and burned out extremely stressed employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out a way to hire more people especially in nursing and laboratory departments.
