I worked at University of Maryland Medical Center part-time (less than an year)

Pros

Staff and managers at UMMC are extremely supportive of continuing education. Employees are encouraged to pursue dreams and goals.

Cons

Being a city hospital, parking can be pricey. Explore all options to find a garage/lot that fits with your budget...ask questions!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase salaries and hourly rate to reflect rise in costs (mainly gas and parking).

I have been working at University of Maryland Medical Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Supportive medical staff and great educational opportunities. Depending on the unit the nursing staff may be either top notch or lacking. I have always had the benefit of very supportive physician supervisors even in those areas where the overall culture was anti-PA and pro CRNP.

    Cons

It is a University and as a PA I have to deal with unprofessional students on a daily basis. On occasion I have had to defend my position on patient care when a resident was not willing to communicate with their Chief or the Attending Physician. Many times the residents and medical students do not appreciate the level of team work that is involved in providing medical care and do not appreciate that a nurse, PA, CRNP, therapist or tech are their system of checks and ballances.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay equity is a problem. If Congress ever passes the Paycheck Fairness Act you are in real trouble.

I worked at University of Maryland Medical Center

    Pros

Really awesome doctors, nurses, etc. High acuity patients from all over the region. Accommodating to school or family obligations. Culture of excellence.

    Cons

It could feel unsafe walking to and from parking. Some of the patient care techs were knowledgeable, hard-working, good people, but those that weren't made life very unpleasant for patients and fellow staff, and management turned a blind eye.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require continuing education from nurses. Require nurses to cross train on other units if you are going to ask them to float there.
