I have been working at University of Massachusetts full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Progressive management, diversity, unionized employees make for a worker-friendly environment. The surroundings are clean, safe, and urbane; nice place to raise a family.

    Cons

Underfunded and undervalued by state; there seems to be money for new buildings but not for resources to support employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work more closely with the legislature to get necessary support, and honor faculty governance. Take more responsibility to raise funds; faculty and staff have enough on their plates already.

I worked at University of Massachusetts as an intern (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fellow employees have all "been there before" and are more than willing to help troubleshoot research problems with you.

    Cons

As with any biological-research driven based company, hourly schedules often fluctuate with conducted experiments, sometimes requiring later work days or earlier starts. 99% of the time these problems are mitigable with some planning ahead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It was a pleasure and an invaluable opportunity to work with such highly motivated professionals as an undergraduate intern.
