A strange place by commercial measures... but then again, it's a university for crying out loud...

I have been working at University of Melbourne

Pros

if you can survive the speed (or lack thereof) and want to retire safely, this is a place for you. great for people with no aspirations, professional or otherwise.

Cons

low wage, aging staff, no real incentives to develop, political in an academic sort of way, slow moving, academic in nature, no respect for professional staff

Advice to ManagementAdvice

hard to say really. It is all relative to the education environment. Something tells me that the "university of the future" isn't going to look like this.

I worked at University of Melbourne full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Wonderful interacting with students - a lot of great staff.

    Cons

Not always cohesion between departments which could lead to confusion for staff and students, especially with referrals. Also a tendency to instigate large policy reviews that didn't seem to go anywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work towards treating casual staff better - there should be some professional development to support them.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
