Very frustrating if you are accustomed to pace, progress and accountability

Communication Manager (Former Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

ProsGood maternity leave policy
Good superannuation (which makes up for the low wages)
Good workplace for administrators who are not particularly talented nor ambitious.
Good job security
Very very bright students and some very bright academics and research staff
Good location
Good governance and policy
Not much work pressure - very 9 to 5.

ConsSenior and executives managers are hired/promoted on account of their academic accolades in a very narrow field rather than their ability to lead and run a multimillion dollar portfolio. Deans, Heads of School and Directors are responsible for administration and management tasks far beyond their ability and many have little experience or the performance record in managing people and/or financial sustainability.
Change is very slow and bureaucratic.
Not overly challenging.
Pay is not based on performance.

Advice to Senior ManagementAccept that the university is not run like a business and there is still a mentality that students are not customers (despite the premium pricetag for the product). A lot of talk, not much action.
