I have been working at University of Miami full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Can't beat location of RSMAS, next to the warm waters off Key Biscayne
Relaxing and collegial atmosphere
Interdisciplinary departments provide opportunities to expand your research
NOAA is very close and approachable
Great library and online access to most scientific journals

Cons

Too relaxing of an atmosphere sometimes. It can feel that people are there for the perks of Miami rather than carreer, which is understandable...
Not many opportunities for growth, but there other Universities close by that can take the spill-over (FIU).

I worked at University of Miami full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    • Location: Coral Gables is gorgeous, and the campus is close to many great venues.
    • Teaching: The best part about my experience was the teaching. I grew to enjoy teaching labs and being with the students.

    Cons

    • People: My particular academic department was pretty small, and the graduate students tended to stick to various small groups delineated mostly by ethnicity/nationality.
    • Course material: This was ultimately my reason for leaving. I no longer enjoyed the material I was learning, and had to leave to pursue something I enjoy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be nice if unilateral decisions weren't made because students complained only after final grades were posted. They had a full semester to say something, ask for help, etc., but nothing happened until they didn't receive an A for final grades.
