    Pros

Working in a laboratory, the hours were flexible.
UofM has a great benefits package: Medical, Dental, Vision for ~$80/mo., plus a 5% employee, 10% employer retirement acct.
    The atmosphere was fairly relaxed.

    Cons

Technicians are in general not respected if they are uninterested in obtaining a PhD.
The pay is below industry compensation for performing similar work.

    Pros

I love working at UM. There are so many opportunities beyond what I am required to do for my job. I am encouraged to attend professional development workshops and keep up to speed in my area of expertise.

    Cons

I work in a very cohesive department. Other departments are not as cohesive and have more friction. Working in higher ed does reduce the potential salary increases over time.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the benefit options. Add an official maternity/paternity program. Reduce parking costs for people who are unable to take buses.
