I have been working at University of Michigan full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Schedule flexibility is great. Can working 4 10 hour days or make up time if needed. Most the staff are friendly and helpful.

Cons

Some of the bosses are micromanagers. Some projects are useless and have no value to them. Time can be spent working on projects that actually make a difference in financials and quanity.

I have been working at University of Michigan full-time

    Pros

    Perfection is expected.
Culture and arts in Ann Arbor.
Very affordable HMO for employees. Good about time off and family care time. Strong senior leadership and university seems to be in good fiscal standing. 200% match on first 5% for retirement. The talent and brilliance that comes to campus is jaw dropping. Many days I feel it a privilege to work here.

    Cons

    Perfection is expected.
Michigan winters and snow days are never called.
Large, and very fragmented organization, so experiences will vary. Middle management untrained for managing people, and it is problematic. Layoffs in a couple areas, attrition in others. Staff is often not being replaced and it is causing heavy workload and stress on those remaining. Univ apparently ignoring this while dumping money into MHealthy program to help keep staff stress down. Raises the last couple years were crummy. Vacation accrual could be better. Parking is expensive and often not close to workplace. Ann Arbor traffic is ridiculous! No quick way to freeways. Increasing pressure on staff to carpool, take bus, or bicycle to work. Less and less accommodation for drivers. Politically, a very active and liberal institution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many of us love it here. It's almost a second home. We appreciate the strong leadership and measures taken to keep the U in good shape. The last couple years, however, have been very hard on staff. It is now time to recognize and remedy that. Please give the push to bus or bike into campus a rest. Accommodating staff cars without charging for parking would go a long way toward improving morale with your overworked employees! Also, please train your managers how to manage staff.

I worked at University of Michigan full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

U of M is a wonderful University to work for. Like with any company or job, WHO you work for is important. The benefits are great because you have their top ranked hospital that provides health care. Their retirement plan is like no other! I only worked in the biological science department and have seen everything from awesome bosses to poor bosses.

    Cons

Salary is not as competitive as in the industry. In biological sciences, some of the work environments are terrible and needs to be monitored more by the higher ups. Notorious for taking advantage of cheap labor (research associates). Unfortunately, there's nothing like that in place because it's academia.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be more monitoring of the people in the higher positions ( ie Principal Investigators).
