    Pros

You can get yourself recognized very easily

    Cons

Not an extraordinary place to do postdoc, as they dont hire their own postdoc for faculty position, so you would end up looking for job at orher University that would be ranked lower than U of M
Salaries are among the lowest for postdoc category

    Advice to Management

Atleast provide salary and retirement benefits to post-docs per NIH recommendations and allow post-doc to apply as PI for their own grants

  2. Excellent benefits, interesting work, slow advancement

    Pros

    - Running things at scale.
    - Being the first to work with new technologies.
    - Fantastic healthcare and retirement.

    Cons

    - Dicey funding for some projects.
    - Developing stuff and maintaining it isn't a focus for many projects, just a requirement of the grant.
    - It's challenging to move up with the same speed as industry positions.
    - Technical staff are occasionally ignored compared to those who want to become professional meeting attenders.

    Advice to Management

Consider valuing those staff members who work outside of research labs but still want to make stuff. Don't outsource everything to SAAS providers and become purchasers of tech, help invent it too. Remember the early days of Merit and that LDAP was birthed at Michigan.
