Current Employee – been working at University of New Mexico
Pros – The best reason for working at the University of New Mexico is the benefits. You get free tuition for some classes when you work full time (and I think when you work part time as well), and this extends to your spouse/significant other and children. The vacation time is exceptional by an employer. And there is deferred compensation for retirement, if that interests you. The new president of UNM, President Schmidy, seems to me to be very open with faculty and staff. I am very impressed with him and his communications with faculty, staff and students.
Cons – A full time, exempt employee gets paid only once a month. This is a big thing to adjust to! Plus raises tend to lag behind all other employers in the Albuquerque area, so over time, unless you can get a promotion, you will fall behind. And I think that promotional opportunities are not very good for individual contributors.
Advice to Senior Management – I have reached the highest position for an individual contributor in my field at UNM, and have been in this job classification for a long time. I am discouraged by the lack of further growth as an individual contributor. I wish either that there were more opportunities for individual contributors to advance, or that there were better opportunites to move into management.
Also, please make all employees bi-weekly. Being paid once a month can be a severe hardship.
