I have been working at University of North Carolina full-time (less than an year)

Pros

Great environment, beautiful campus, great colleagues, low stress. Mission-driven and most people are devoted to their work. Open, thoughtful environment.

Cons

State employee salary and (lack of) benefits. Not much opportunity for growth. Can be stodgy, bureaucratic at times. Feels hard to make a difference. Budget woes for 5+ years, can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work hard to repair recently tarnished reputation. Make bold decisions!

I worked at University of North Carolina full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Loved the environment, my co-workers, the faculty and students. Great challenges, supportive colleagues, never a dull day!

    Cons

As staff (not faculty), I felt that there was little room for career advancement without completely changing departments and job areas. In 5 1/2 years my salary increases were mostly from legislative action and when those stopped due to the recession, I saw this as a dead-end job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More professional development for staff. The University does a much better job in supporting and encouraging the careers of its faculty than it does for SPA staff.

    "The Carolina Way"

I worked at University of North Carolina full-time

    Pros

Prestigous University so the name carries a lot of weight even outside of the South. I moved and was surprised how many people (not all) recognize the Carolina name for more than basketball.

    Cons

Was tired of hearing about the "Carolina Way." Change is not always bad. Hired many UNC grads which continued this status quo thinking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees and their time. Not everyone sees their job as their life.
