I worked at University of Northern Iowa full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Use to have one of the finest support staff, not enough support for the bottom, real working staff now.

Cons

Affirmative action emphasized too much. Traditions of the University are being lost.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Operational expenditures should be more balanced.

I have been working at University of Northern Iowa full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Faculty union
    Partner benefits
Medical benefits depending on hire date I have an excellent plan, access to Mayo clinic, etc
3/3 teaching load if doing "scholarly" work within past few years.
    Smaller school-12,000 students
    Very active lgbt student organization

    Cons

Benefits cut for newer hires, moved to managed care
Funding: one of 3 state universities with highest number of in state students paying in state tuition. Funded by state at lowest level and has been cut repeatedly in last 15 years
95% of students are white, Iowans, very limited life experience, many limited in critical thinking. Iowa K-12 education system not what people seem to think it is.
Majority of faculty/staff hires are Iowans and/or graduates of UNI
Community-hard to make friends, people are "pleasant" and quite closed off, not open to new people and ideas. Even students agree about the characteristics, local and out of town students.
Recruit from Chicago, Gary, Texas with little peer support once here. These students plus large international (Chinese is largest group, Mid East, Africa) group are not accustomed to climate, level of racism in communities.
Iowa has largest number of persons of color in prison in the US yet make up only 5% of the population.
    Small town, long winter
