I worked at University of Northumbria full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pension, generous leave and flexi time.

    Cons

I used to love working in IT Systems at Northumbria, no more sadly. Under the current management regime, the old 'can-do' culture has been replaced by a culture of fear and intimidation.
Wages have been cut and entire pay grades abolished, good skilled staff with a wealth of skills and experience are being ignored and sidelined in favour of yes-men and brown-nosers, projects that could have been developed in-house have been outsourced at great expense, enterprise systems replaced by inadequate open source software, experienced managers forced out and replaced by clueless box-tickers...
Staff speaking out have been threatened with dismissal and legal action.
Not a nice place to work any more unfortunately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees - they are the ones who know how the institution works.
Don't make change just for the sake of it.
Make use of the skills the department has.
