I worked at University of South Alabama part-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Good flexibility and work-life balance. Very diverse group of co-workers. Progressively growing campus.

Cons

Compensation for students typically only ranges from minimum wage ($7.50) to $8.00 an hour. Opportunities for advancement were political and good workers typically go unnoticed. Weak communication exists between workers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your employees, even the student workers. Listen to them and have a genuine interest in what they have to say. Acknowledge and respect workers, even if they are "under you."

I have been working at University of South Alabama part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Paid for tuition for all the coursework needed for graduate school and provided a competitive stipend to live off campus.

    Cons

There are a lot of hoops to jump through in order to get things accomplished (i.e. purchase of supplies, hiring undergrads for help in the lab).

Former Employee - RN, BSN Trauma Registrar in Mobile, AL

I worked at University of South Alabama as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Great work environment! Excellent close knit staff with many of them being long term employees.
Close Parking to Trauma Center. School tuition assistance.

    Cons

Too narrowly written job descriptions set forth by trying to meet grant/budget requirements only work to exclude several exemplary potential candidates when all the 'stars' don't align perfectly against the must meet requirements as written.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Celebrate the nurses more. Let the nurses collaborate as a committee each quarter to discuss and formulate education enhancement CEU opportunities, engage in and schedule collaborative social exchanges with the ever changing med students in rotation, and hold QA/QI Reviews with not just Nurse Managers but staff as well. Nurse often perform better when they know
'why' something (albeit may seem frivolous but is required) to be done a certain way in order to meet National accreditation standards
