Current Employee - Postdoctoral Fellow in East Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at University of Southern California full-time (more than an year)

Pros

-Good benefits: match 401K contribution, health care benefits options, strong alumni network, winter break vacation

Cons

-Private university: PIs do not have to pay post-docs NIH salary standard; lose employee benefits when your salary is paid from a fellowship (currently working to correct it).

I have been working at University of Southern California full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very stable environment. Great retirement benefits. Great work life balance. If you have a family and need a stable job, this is the place to be.

    Cons

Corporate bureaucracy. Hard to get promotions. Promotions rarely happen among staff members, to get promoted, one usually need to apply for an opening just like any outside applicants and compete with them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a more vibrant workplace environment and culture, and devise better career development paths. The management needs to be more agile, the slow-moving management is creating a stifling environment for those that just want to focus on accomplishing their jobs.
