Nice relaxed work environment, dedicated co-workers.

I worked at University of Southern Maine full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The staff and faculty are supportive and enthusiastic about teaching. The student to staff ratio in labs and lectures is excellent. It is a good environment to conduct research with high level biomedical instrumentation.

    Cons

It is a small program that had few specialists in my field. There are not as many opportunities for graduate level coursework.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Facilitate stronger connection to the UMaine system to enable enhanced coursework.

I have been working at University of Southern Maine

    Pros

Interacting with students and coworkers keeps the work interesting, great benefits package including tuition waivers, more laid back environment than corporations, opportunities for extra-curricular activities like fitness or adult education

    Cons

There has been a noticeable shift in the last decade from a much more supportive, engaging workplace, to a place where cost efficiency is the only consideration. Also, there is limited opportunities for promotion unless you apply for a new job in another department, but this may be true of many public institutions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Investing in your employees and supporting their growth will pay off in their loyalty and willingness to do more for the university.
