I worked at University of Southern Mississippi part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great co workers with an opportunity to work at the heart of the university. There was flexible scheduling and decent pay. You get to learn the ins and outs of student organizations and some university operations. Room for advancement if interested and if you show initiative.

    Cons

This was a work study position, but I was reprimanded for studying while on the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tailor your guidance, etc. to fit students vs. professionals

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi

    Pros

Town is nice - good pubic schools for kids, inexpensive housing, short commute
    a scattering of good students

    Cons

pay scale is low even compared to other Mississippi Universities
basically open admissions results in poor, unmotivated, discouraging classes
    benefits package is terrible
few written rules + lots of administrators with turf to protect = very negative atmosphere
lots of nepotism - well connected locals ignore the rules
nasty, political and punitive tenure process ( I got mine working 100 hours a week... good luck)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

reorganize and fire any administrator who is not enhancing the university missions in teaching and research (should save 4-5 million per year)
find better benefits for employees - current ones are a joke
    establish SOME admission standards
