I have been working at University of Tennessee full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits. A fine place to earn your stripes in life science laboratories. Fantastic biological imaging unit and willing mentors.

    Cons

Low pay and grant-based research, as per the usual with Universities. Nepitism and seasoned researchers tossed out to make way for new PhD's with hot grants = no loyalty or job security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take stock of who you have, not just a name on a piece of paper occupying some laboratory space. You may have tossed out some well respected and world-class scientists.

Overall I had a good experience at UT until a new administrator arrived on the scene.

I worked at University of Tennessee full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits are above average especially if you're wanting to attend school tuition free or if your children are going to attend college as they are given 1/2 tuition. Time off is generous along with paid holidays.

    Cons

Management and red tape - a lot of our adjustments had to be approved by headquarters in MEMPHIS and took an inordinate amount of time to be approved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to the common employee.
