Pros

Generally more relaxed schedules, Professors who supervise research are usually driven and passionate. Excellent opportunity to develop skill sets and network.

Cons

Often PhDs also required to teach classes, distracting them from research. Sometimes professors choose students for research based more on personal reasons rather than on skill, talent, or desire to contribute.

Advice to Management

Stop relentlessly gauging research budgets. And stop building more buildings when the current ones are under utilized. Where's the much needed parking structure.

Typical research cons... sometimes long periods of struggle between successes.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you have been doing. The level of involvement is good.

    Pros

Great environment, terrific benefits, progressive work

    Cons

Low pay, bureacratic rules, not much opportunity for advancement within department

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to reward great employees -- good people are lost frequently because the salary system doesn't reward high performers
