Pros

There is long term stability working for the State of Washington and benefits include generous health care and good retirement options. There are also stable pensions and retirement benefits.

Cons

Although the University of Washington is revolutionary in research, the rest of the institution is slow to change. Change happens at a glacial pace, and I miss working for the dynamic private sector where it feels like you are making a difference.

Advice to Management

Please use the talents and creativity of your employees. Stop shunning innovation and original thinking.

    Pros

The benefits is primarily the best part of working in U.W. It is great for an employee who has family. The UW fairly compensates via health benefits to make sure their employees are protected. Other than that, the work consistency is there, so there isn't too much of a surprise when changes occur.

    Cons

The measurement of growth and reward is universally structured because of internal control. Departments can't do much to be flexible. It is good structure for people who prefer yearly increases of salary based on dedicated experience. Not the best structure for ambitious driven individuals. Although with proper patience, it can be manageable.

    Advice to Management

Good leadership. U.W. is highly influenced by the State, so flexibility on processes can be long and strenuous. Good place to work for employees with family to take advantage of the great benefits.

  2. Very rewarding!

    Pros

There are very few schools which allow undergraduates to run office hours but at the UW there are many of these opportunities.

    Cons

It can be very exhausting to work many hours while a student even with very limited hours being worked due to the number of students who show up to office hours asking for help due to the size of classes and number of TA's available to answer questions.
