I have been working at University of Washington full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Medical benefits are outstanding in a low-stress environment. Not a bad place to work if you are looking for a secure, low paying job and have a medical condition. Performance evaluation process and unions make it difficult to get fired. WA state labor policy appears to make downsizing difficult.

    Cons

From an administrative perspective, does not appear to be a good place to work if you are in a management position and appreciate efficiency. Internal training programs appear to be non-existent for administrative staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Conduct formal, biennial (at a minimum depending on performance) performance reviews of lower-level support positions.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
  2.

Good intentions, too resource-strapped and bureacratic to innovate.

I worked at University of Washington part-time

    Pros

    Large, stable institution.
    Work-life balance is definitely possible.
About as consistent as you can get in today's economy.
As a big player in academia, working for the UW gives you good access to vendors and the thought-leader space.

    Cons

Ugh--so much bureaucracy it can be maddening.
Lots of stagnation--many people have been in the same job for so long that they're burnt out, detached and not doing a particularly good job any more.
No real opportunities for change or innovation at such a large, slow-moving, government funded organization.
Lots of talk about good ideas, not so much support for execution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more honest and transparent about the value and goals of each department. Work to simplify processes to find efficiencies and prevent great people, ideas and processes from getting lost in the government quagmire.
