I have been working at University of Washington part-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Clean facilities, average pay (to start), everything up to code, good work environment, good management staff, climate-controlled buildings, set work hours, easily accessible by bus/car, paid street & private lot parking, nice campus.

Cons

Takes a while for maintenance to fix things like burnt out light bulbs, bureaucracy, very little job security at low-level positions, lack of regular raises, mandatory union membership

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regular merit raises would be nice.

I worked at University of Washington full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working with the students - although there is a growing number who give off a sense that they are "entitled."

    Cons

Medical, Dental, and Nursing schools are steeped in hierarchy and turf protection. Cronyism is a real problem. Devil Wears Prada atmosphere where woman on woman bullying is the norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch where there are areas of large turnover. Seek out information about bad management by faculty - bullying of students and staff. Students at least have a voice - staff feel small, voiceless, and defenseless.

Good experience but it really depends on what type of job and what kind of supervisor you have.

I have been working at University of Washington full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits/retirement, etc. Some opportunity for advancement/classes (depending on where you are and who your supervisor is). Some depts offer discretionary leave in lieu of raise freeze.

    Cons

Raise freeze going into the 5th year. A lot of work and pressure to perform with increased volume without raises but yet increase in parking fees and most times insurance premiums and taxes so ultimately, you end up making less each year. Minimal room for advancement if you have reached the top of your salary range and/or topped out in your current field and limited support/approval to reclass/reallocate current position to a higher level. May make more working in the private sector.
