I have been working at University of Washington full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Great organizational mission; intellectual and entrepreneurial if you're in a knowledge-worker position.

Cons

Navigating distributed decision making can be cumbersome; things take longer than they should.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue doing what you're doing. Distributed decision making is by design and inherent in an academic model, so can't be avoided.

    A great learning experience.

    Pros

Working at the University of Washington is a great opportunity to give back to the school, and as a TA, to directly give back to your department. Great coworkers and a feeling of accomplishment and appreciation from working.

    Cons

Sometimes the hours suck, but most of the time it's fine. The base pay is decent, but not amazing. Occasionally interferes with schoolwork.

I have been working at University of Washington full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The brand, the name, nothing else. It looks good on a resume which is the only redeeming value. Use that to get a real job.

    Cons

You're not encouraged to advance or grow career wise. You must stay in the same job and it's expected. Managers grandfather in friends which makes the working enviornment that much harder. Refer a friend and if they don't meet the criteria, i.e. pretty blonde girl or blue eyed guy then forget it. They have the same hiring criteria as Abercrombie & Fitch. The infamous benefits are not that great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop allowing mangers and employees to run the company without supervision. Create a more diverse and fair playing field.
