Little opportunity for promotion without transferring departments, compensation based more on politics than on merit

I worked at University of Wisconsin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The campus environment is great and there are a lot of fringe benefits (bus pass, Union membership, etc) that you get.

    Cons

Unfortunately, compensation is based entirely on external politics not merit. Benefits have been repeatedly cut while salary has remained stagnant for the last five years.

It's simply not a good workplace.

I worked at University of Wisconsin part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

UW-Parkside is a fine place to teach because regular faculty teach three classes each semester in most fields, and many classes are limited to 25 students.
    Campus size
    Beauty of campus
Excellent music, art and drama facilities.
    Excellent Drama department.

    Cons

UW-Parkside accepts more students who apply than any UW campus which means that there are more students who need pre-college courses in reading, writing, and math and more tutorial services.
I retired from teaching as an adjunct lecturer at UW-Parkside in approximately 2002 rather than the only option available as my last year there as 2009, my only option below. I taught there full-time or part-time from 1972 to 1983 and periodically in later years until approximately 2002.
