I worked at University of Wyoming part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Best student job on-campus, working at a computer while studying. Basically getting paid to do what you would be doing otherwise. Supervisors are awesome. Techs are polite and friendly. Scheduling system is fantastic. The community is incredible. The University of Wyoming is an employer that goes out of their way to offer the most to those employed by them. The hiring process is a not terribly long or intense. Beautiful campus and friendly, down to earth people. For a rural area, it is a busy little place.

Cons

The parking is atrocious. The winters are cold, so combine that with the bad parking - and it can be pretty miserable on the worst days. Also, some of the shifts for student positions are broken down to 1hr slots. Can be quite annoying to work split shifts or one hour slots.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

During the HR process, if an application is submitted and is rejected due to the fact that it is incomplete - it would be nice to be notified before the job closes. Otherwise, this is the best place that I have ever worked.

I have been working at University of Wyoming full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The university is well-resourced in comparison to peer institutions because of the mineral wealth in the state (this changes when prices plummet). The size of the university is nice, and it's possible to make connections across disciplinary, departmental, and college lines. In general, the faculty is full of smart, talented people who want to do good work. It's possible to stand out here and make a name for yourself because it's a small pond.

    Cons

The community is small and insular, and it can be very challenging to enjoy living in this small town. Th university has not been able to hire adequate faculty and staff, even with very high operating budgets, so faculty and staff are stressed. There is a culture of trying to purchase "out of the box" solutions instead of building good systems that actually work for students and employees. While the people here generally mean well, there is resistance to change and we lack a culture of creativity and innovation.
