Urban Outfitters – “Department Manager”
Pros
It can fun and rewarding. On most occasions you get to give your input on where your dept merchandise goes, how to impact your sales, and how to train your staff.
Each manager brings their own style and associates are a riot. There are times that my store felt like we were one big family, especially during the holidays. When have a supportive team, work gets done and the day flies by.
Cons
Many occasions where mgmt does not appreciate you. Long hours and To-Do lists that are unrealistic with the time frame given. The stress can really pile on. I've cried out of frustration and have also witness at least 6 other managers/employees cry out of stress from this job.
IN STORE
Managers can get high school, backstabbing, and all sort of passive aggressive actions against each other. You compete for hours during the day to get your own tasks done
Associates call out/ come in late all the time. Really puts a strain when you have tasks to do. they also quit on the spot.
Shoplifters can be dangerous and life threatening and sometimes just annoying (and insane on some occasions)
Corporate
intimidating and set unrealistic goals for large projects. They stopped yearly income raises because of declining sales yet we keep opening stores. They also do not help with instore issues. This can be a huge issue especially if a lot of problems are coming from the store manager or merchandisers who govern the store
Advice to Senior Management
please treat us like humans. We need positive reinforcement. You always talk about good vibe, it first needs to come from you to our District Mgrs, to us, to our associates, to our customers to our shareholders and in the end back to you.
GLEN: please revise how we evaluate and calculate time and money allocated to floorsets. Everyone always runs out of time and money. The staff stress out for a month to the point of anxiety attacks and tears. Please help us. Currently our only refuge is zanax and happy hour
