Chaotic, poorly run but interesting and promising. Has its cash cow, needs a pig and a goat.

I have been working at VMware

Pros

I came in via acquisition and am outside of corporate so keep that in mind
Seemingly motivated sales force
Customers like us and give VMW access,
ESX is a no-brainier currently- absolutely dominate at the moment
Acquisitions of some interesting cos like Socialcast.
Lots of inside, outside and channel sales scale
Affable, bright CEO
A reasonably positive corporate culture

Cons

No clearly articulated vision for what they want to become
I can't overstate- CHAOTIC environment over-loaded with very poorly planned and executed process
No one is in charge. No way to get anything done.
Info Tech sucks. Bad, buggy systems, It;s March and I don't have a comp plan.
No discernible product acquisition strategy
Feels poorly run from my perspective
Loose federation of products need integration

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the company before doing any more acquisitions. Bring in professional help from integrators like Accenture or IBM. Can't EMC help??
Don't change the company before having a plan to manage the change!!!
Empower your managers to fix problems by exercising discretion while you right the ship
Getting cheap with your employees doesn't server your shareholders.
Get a strategy
You won't have this monopoly forever. Buy BMC, truly integrate with EMC and you've got something.

I have been working at VMware

    Pros

I like the engineering culture in VMware. The company still has some smart guys. VMware is making the right transition to cloud computing.

    Cons

The original WS/ESX engineers are very intelligent. They made revolutionary products with high quality. Engineers hired recent years are not as good as the old guys and they were put on new products. New cloud computing products are not as good as WS/ESX. The company did not put right guy on right job. Big number of smart engineers left the company. I didn't see any practical action to retain talent.
In general QE’s technical skill is not as good as developers. But they get promoted so quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

put right guys on strategic products.
    retain talent.
    stop buying useless companies.

    I worked at VMware

    Pros

VMware has a great core (ESX/vSphere) product. Customer base within the virtualization world is big and happy with the product.

    Cons

The disconnect between the global teams and regional sales/go to market teams is amazing. This is and will continue to cause VMware to be unable to really bring their cloud vision to market

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so egotistical. Y'all are not that smart and not that experienced. Learn from the industry losers and winners. Treat employees as a vaulable resource.
