I worked at VMware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great campus, customers and products. People are passionate about the the technology.

    Cons

Poor leadership. A lot of smart, unrecognized people led by not-so-capable leadership. There seems to be a huge gap between who general employees recognize as great and who leadership recognizes as great. Those that are good at managing up wins.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be fooled by employees that are good at managing up. Take time to get to know, listen and recognize the employees that are looked up to by their peers.

VMware is a huge software development company where it can be hard not to feel like a cog in the machine.

I worked at VMware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great campus and benefits.
There are a lot of really smart people here.
    Pay was more than adequate.
There are a lot of different projects so you can move around to new things.

    Cons

This is a really big group of developers and it's hard not to feel overwhelmed by the bureaucracy and complexity of the products and organizations.
Be prepared to be re-organized about every 6 months. VMware has some significant growing pains and isn't always effective at using all the talent they've hired.
Much of the work is re-active and not pro-active.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the software development groups need to be more autonomous. It seemed like the various products where all intertwined with a huge cumbersome build process. It had moved beyond manageable. I ended up working in a group that spent all its time reacting to problems and fixing them. The root cause of the problems was not fixed though.
