Advice to Management

Make sure compensation matches performance. I've felt underpaid for some time now.
It's not easy to grow internally: promotions are slow to come and transitions to management are even rarer.

    Pros

    1) Growth creates learning opportunities for those who take the initiatives. There're many people who've moved around different departments / roles several times over the years. Its lacking of process and infrastructure often allow things to get done quickly if you have the guts and creativity. Can be frustrating sometimes however
    2) Nice new campus and healthy snacks. Plenty of greens and sunlight. Cafe provides adequate choices. Weekly social gathering
    3) Brand recognition. One of the fastest growing company in a hot field. People in the high tech industry in general respect the experience

    Cons

    1) Very incompetent HR.
    2) Management by weekly reports at all level. Managers at every level spent hours every week to produce and "roll-up" these fancy weekly essays, then sent to the same long list of managers. Usually receive 15 - 20 of these a week, but often only have time to read headline.
    3) Growing politics. People who are competent and who speak truth get frustrated.

    Advice to Management

    Don't be so arrogant;
    Respect truth;
    Reward high performers

    Pros

    VMware has provided for a stable job so far and the compensation seems to be at least on par with other companies. For the most part, the employees are friendly and pleasant to work with. Overall the company seems to be holding a reasonable course and should continue to be successful for some time to come. For the most part, you are given some flexibility in finding work that interests you.

    Cons

    The company has grown way too fast. The fast growth has allowed mediocre employees to excel in all the confusion. Sometimes there is a lot of chaos. Often there is a disconnect between management and engineers. The headquarters is located in a boring office park.

    Advice to Management

    Enforce more accountability at the lower management level. All to often do managers want to play it safe or point fingers at another team. Invest in better marketing. Eliminate the under-performers that we have accrued during our period of way too fast growth.
