Pros

Benefits package, work/life balance, bleeding-edge technology, snacks/drinks, onsite gym (HQ only), dental.

The benefits package is excellent and comprehensive. Management from top-down stresses a work-life balance, and strives to maintain it. As a leading software company, we have access to the absolute latest hardware and software provided by our partners. Free snacks/drinks in the cafeterias. At HQ, there is an onsite gym, and there's dental.

Cons

The current restructuring is leaving many confused and concerned about the future. This needs to be accelerated beyond normal bounds to ensure the company is successful. Communicating between departments has always seemed to be a weak point. This needs to get resolved. In addition, support from departments within the company need to be second-nature. We shouldn't have to beg for support from another department to get it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the restructuring done, get the company working together as a team, and we can do some fantastic work. I've been with the company for some time, and change as been the M.O. for VMware. We're getting closer to being a mature company.

    I worked at VMware

    Pros

    Great virtualization technology that is used by many of the F500 companies. Customers love the technology and are interested in how to leverage it to save their IT costs. Having the customer support and validation was what was exciting about VMware and its products.

    The Palo Alto campus was a very nice place to work, along with the perks of the unlimited snacks, drinks and coffee.

    Cons

    Lack of culture, teamwork. A lot of the management team was focused on their accomplishments without any acknowledgement of how their teams assisted in these accomplishments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Try to develop a cohesive, integrated business strategy that is shared by all. Seems like there were conflicting or overlapping priorities from the senior management team.

    Pros

    Some of the best reasons to work for VMware include, technology innovation, and the ability to create new markets by solving customers' problems. It is facinating to be part of the phenomenal growth, and to learn about the related pros and cons in organizational development, operations, talent and career management, product development, competitive positioning as well as partnering. The employee base is very diverse in terms of experience and competencies, as well as cultures. Overall, at VMware you can learn through your immediate professional responsibilities, as well as "just" by observing all that happens around you. There is a true ability to influence, and make a difference, professionally.

    Cons

    The talent pool is very diverse, representing the VMware "generations" of hiring, where the hiring for the past 3-5 years has brought in more competent and experienced talent. This causes friction. Many new hires take jobs that are below their qualifications, while existing employees in similar positions can barely manage their jobs. There aren't clear career paths, nor is career development supported in any systematic and consistent way. HR is relatively weak, although the recent, increased focus on HR seems to be bringing improvements and a promise of better times ahead in terms of career development and supporting programs. The management fabric is thin, lacking competencies, experience and interest in people management. Some of the operational systems and processes are truly horrific, resulting in wasted time, frustration and overall inefficiencies. In some organizations, there are issues related to equal employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    With the new executive management on board, there seems to be a pretty good idea on how to take the company to the next level. I've got great confidence in their vision and strategy. However, in order to be able to execute, some organizational and operational issues need to get fixed. It would be critical to take a close look at the middle management, trying to identify true talent and get rid of the "game players". There are lots of great, passionate, hard working employees who continue to drive the company forward with very limited recognition for their work. It would be important to identify these individuals and implement sufficient recognition programs to ensure job satisfaction and employee retention. Increased transparency on job scopes, career plans, compensation and related decision making is important. The operational systems across marketing, sales and finance need to get streamlined and better integrated.
