I have been working at VMware full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Employees are given a lot of autonomy. Fast growing company with opportunity to take on assignments with variety. Takes employee feedback seriously and tries to act on it. Customers love VMware.

Cons

Almost impossible to get promoted as they like prefer to hire from outside the company. Employees are loaded and over worked. Middle level managers need better training on how to lead people.

Very hard to get things done. Moving slower and slower each year. Declining product quality.

    Pros

    Very good pay and benefits
There are still some very smart and nice people (but they are in decline)
Nice campus and physical work environment

    Cons

Very heavyweight and dysfunctional release management process.
Very slow moving. Takes enormous engineering effort each year to put out a vSphere product release, while not moving the needle very much.
Toxic politics and a fair amount of silo-ing and back-stabbing. Overall a very harsh engineering culture where different silos tear and grind at each other rather than unify and collaborate.
Company pays lots of lip service to meritocracy and accountability, but what happen daily is just the opposite. Toxic and incompetent people are allowed to be around for years, wrecking havoc on the engineering organization.
Product quality seems to be getting worse each year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a cold hard look at what you have (versus what you say) and decide whether that is what you actually want. Don't believe so much in your own press and greatness, because you may be the emperor with no clothes. Surrounding ourselves with sycophants and you will not know what you're doing wrong until it's too late.
