Current Employee - Staff Engineer in Palo Alto, CA
Current Employee - Staff Engineer in Palo Alto, CA

I have been working at VMware full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

- culture of excellence, quality
- a lot of smart people
- genuine commitment to innovation

Cons

- executives lack ability Inability to make tough decision; they allow competing projects to go on too long undermining eachother leading to a no-win situations.
- hyper-visor / platform team have too much say / power: VMware claim they want to move "up the stack" into management software and new domains but efforts have been obstructed by senior, core teams who only have experience building operating systems and command line tools.
- promises of technical career progression don't seem too promising: Sr Staff and above seem dominated by old-timers and acquirees; little potential for organic promotion
- recent "re-focussing" and spinning-off of the "Pivotal Initiative" seems to be an admission the company is incapable of moving into new areas which is disheartening.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be decisive and put an end to the Darwinian product development: choose to invest in something and get everybody behind it.

    I worked at VMware full-time

    Pros

Coworkers are great, fun crowd, lots of camaraderie. Office cafeteria has lots of snacks, drinks, etc...as well as breakfast tacos Fridays and beer/wings in the afternoon.

    Cons

Excessive micro-management with regard to Sales. No stress on product knowledge, nor any care toward actual productivity, but rather the appearance of productivity. Contests and incentives drive the floor and hinder any account management, as the push is to accrue "tally-marks" to win money, instead of discover, qualify, and develop legitimate sales opportunities.
Unrealistic quotas for the territories-- which directly affects income. Management shrugged off the issue with a half-hearted apology. For territories that suffered from last year's hurricanes- no exceptions or acknowledgements were made regarding earning abilities/quota adjustments.
Too much emphasis on floor ranking (also heavily weighted on contests and call statistics), it's a determining factor in career advancement and firing/layoffs. Some people appear to have been set up for promotion instead of earning it. Days are spent being monitored, judged, tallied, and ranked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow reps to use some of their individual skills/talents to manage accounts and drive new business. Provide effective training and time toward learning the products being sold.

I worked at VMware full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

VMware is full of nice, smart people. The average age is not too young, which means people give importance to having a balanced life. The VMware Foundation shows that the company cares about more than just making money. Employees are given five days per year to use volunteering at non-profit organizations.

    Cons

Company has grown fast and IT processes are sometimes medieval. Sometimes, things get done only by working around the established processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in IT. It's ridiculous that a company this size has to postpone simple fixes to systems used manage Channel Programs, Customer Support, and other key functions.
