I worked at VMware full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Decent pay and benefits, company tech is ahead of the game

Cons

Management can be short-sighted, politically driven, and generally frustrating to deal with. Management by shiny object is often true.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read a few popular business books and actually apply the learnings. Don't kid yourself into thinking employees don't see through your games.

I have been working at VMware full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great enthusiasm, strong culture, positive atmosphere. Strong appreciative client base. Tremendous growth opportunities in EMEA and Asia Pacific so the company still have tremendous upside.

    Cons

Weak management, poor communication, political hierarchy tacking shape with ineffective. job defensive mindset beginning to invade Director and above psyche - reminiscent of Microsoft circa 1998-2002. Client base beginning to dig deeper in VMware value proposition, awareness of competitive offerings. Companies looking to ensure they don't become too "imbedded" and dependent on 1 particular vendor, and VMware suffering from that perception.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Establish an enterprise sales culture, to much focus on "the number" not how to effectively up skill the field resources to be able to achieve "the number". Far too many messages from corporate that confuse VMware's real strengths and direction. Messaging about Pivotal its relationship VMware & EMC weakens current VMware positioning. The 900 lay offs were a sign that the company cares more about Wall Street perception that its employees, and the manner on which it was executed and communicated was amateur.

I have been working at VMware full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - good salary and benefits, campus
    - pretty interesting work trying to bring something unique to the marketplace
    - recent reorg finally brought much needed focus and clarity on what the company wants to be

    Cons

    - some bad decisions leading to massive wasted engineering efforts
    - no uniform process followed across teams
    - slowly losing some of its shine
    - politics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Customer focus is what made vmware great. Off late, some of the decisions are not totally aligned with customer needs leading to wasted efforts. Please bring laser like customer focus to all the project decisions.
