I worked at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Brilliant Engineers Opportunities to learn - tons of resourceful people you can learn from Benefits - great health plans, great 401k options, and great perks, MSDN accts for each engineer, Safari Books account for each engineer

Cons

- Politics and senselessness rampant throughout engineering leadership - engineers cannot regularly work from home. - New executive team is more focused on stock price than innovation - Segmentation of products - product teams are too silo'd from eachother. - Currently, in the midst of an exodus of great talent from Steve Harrod, Bogamil, as well as middle management. The smartest leaders are leaving...but it doesn't stop there. VMware is losing the most talented engineers to start-ups and other corperations (IMO) because innovation has dried up. Engineers are tired of integrating software and want to get back to building fresh ideas.

Advice to Management

Focus on innovation and stop copy-catting. VMware has fallen behind the innovation train and it's using its bank account to acquire IP to catch up. Then, burning engineering time integrating acquisitions into the product portfolio. VMware needs to get back in the leadership role of the industry. They've been doing this for a long time, but it's become the norm

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A very big organization and getting bigger by the day in terms of revenue, people, profits, campus size - you name it. I have been here almost five years, and in all fairness, executive management has handled it well as the company and its business has scaled. A lot of opportunities and interesting projects to work on as VMware takes the idea of virtualization to the entire data center. Some old timers are still around so one can be lucky in finding a great mentor. mid level, experienced (me) engineers add to the strength of execution, while younger new grads, interns bring in new ideas, energy and fun.

    Cons

Going up the ladder can be challenging which depends on the kind of project you are working on. If you are involved in a project that has a significant business impact and you see it through, the odds are better for your team, business unit to grow and along with that comes your professional growth. The challenge is to find and getting involved in such a project/product development.

    Advice to Management

At the end of the day its an engineering company. I am leaning towards an opinion that engineers are the one s driving this company. Lets hope it stays that way.

I worked at VMware as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Mentor is kind, patient, and informative. Managers are very kind to interns. The company benefits and pays for interns are very good: free housing and transportation. Overall, VMware is a great place for starting a career in software engineering.

    Cons

VMware is a big company now, so many routine tasks and not challenging enough.
