I have been working at VMware full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

All the espresso, soda, sparking water and tea to float you down a river. Convenient location off of Highway 280. Some buildings have a very open office concept with short cubicle walls thus providing natural lighting. Fun events for employees. Good rate of pay.

    Cons

Construction going on for a year now that has made it stressful just to get to work. Open office concept makes for a very loud work place with way too much foot traffic walking by and noise from the break rooms with some buildings having a work environments of basically working in a basement. There is a lot of turnover with employees coming and going and way too many consultants here. In fact we seem to have so many contractors from India that the company is more and more of an Indian culture and less of an American one. In one department there seems to be very little planning ahead. Everything is last minute and becomes an emergency thus having the administrative staff running around stressed out instead of management planning ahead. The onsite café in the main building where the C-Level executives are is limited and very disappointing. The chef is trying too hard to have very unusual foods instead of just creating some good food to eat and if you order something from the grill be prepared to not only have it take 30 minutes but for them to mess up your order. Most importantly, there is no concise way to get things done. You end up using 3-4 different systems in order to get something accomplished and something always ends up going wrong. If you need to contact the help desk, you are phoning someone in India who ends messing things up even worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage your employees to plan more ahead especially at the higher level of management. Require all management to take employee relations class to help them communicate more affectively with all levels. Require employees to take a class in effective management and thus becoming more proactive and less reactive. Please centralize most of the processes so that things don't get so convoluted.
