Former Employee - Finance Manager in Palo Alto, CA
Former Employee - Finance Manager in Palo Alto, CA

I worked at VMware full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Great facilities at HQ
Great benefits
Great products (but in a matured market with limited growth potentials)

Cons

- Overly competitive (some competitiveness is healthy, but this place takes it to the next level)
- Too many head chefs in the kitchen.
- Horrible managers who don't trust their employees and micro-manage.
- Most worker-bees work under extreme pressure and fear
- Unseasoned managers with no proper training on how to be effective managers/ team leaders.
- People don't know this, but layoffs are norms here.
- During annual performance review, my manager said "you go to gym at lunchtime, right? When you are on the treadmill, why don't you use that time to think about work and process improvement?" I think that said it all.

I have been working at VMware

    Pros

    Small teams
    Good benefits
    Decent pay
CFO who seems genuinely interested in implementing a rotation program
Managers who try to support a work life balance

    Cons

Upward moves within finance are difficult. The work load burns many analysts out within the first year thus leading to high turnover.
Operations is not very supportive of finance and rarely invites them to a seat at the table.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to ease the workload on your analyst so they want to stay and grow with the company

    Pros

Great benefits, great growth potential, innovative.

    Cons

Gobbles up and spits out acquisitions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please think about your acquisition strategy before bringing on loads of people you don't intend to keep around. Companies are more than just a technology, they're full of people whose livelihoods depend on those jobs.
