I have been working at VMware full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

VMware as a company is great. Superb innovations from most corners of the company. The engineers are super smart. The campus has been fully updated and it is beautiful. The company is incredibly environmentally conscious, this is great!!

Cons

The EUC management team continues to be not up to par. There are several VPs who should be fired immediately for the following reasons:
1. Frequent and regular deceptive practices and lying to employees
2. Unbelievably blatant cronyism favoring certain employees
3. Lack of market understanding. Still completely clueless about why the competition is leading
4. Sabotage employees career growth because of self insecurity
5. Absolutely no accountability on performances

Therefore, strongly recommend that you do not join the EUC business unit at all cost until they once again clean house.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management at EUC had better fix the internal problems ASAP or risk losing some of the best talents. The morale within the team is at an all time low due to the fact that a couple of VPs are all about themselves and their cronies. These VPs are all too willing (and are already working) to jeopardize the entire business in order to satisfy their own benefits.

Enough talk about how Jack Welch should be the model. Time to take concrete actions. Eliminate these bozo VPs before it is too late.

    Treats contractors like dirt

I have been working at VMware as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Nice campus, challenging work good lunch

    Cons

Contractors are treated badly. Expect to work 60 hrs a week, and get comped for 40. Late nights and weekends are common. Users totally overrun IT managers, and the PMO forces adherence to process. You're in the middle. Bad project planning and scheduling. Excel is a staple. They have Sharepoint, but don't know how to use it effectively. As a bonus, you may be literally let go at any time, contracts notwithstanding. Contracts only let for 3 months at a time, and are renewed. Zero feedback from management. Expect to be told everything is great right up to the time you are let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either use the process to control your users or stop calling yourself managers.

Former Employee - Member of Technical Staff in Palo Alto, CA

I worked at VMware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The Palo Alto campus is great and feels good to be there. The technology is very good and some really smart people to work with. To me the environment looked quite open and many folks were easily approachable

    Cons

The management is very volatile. Most managers are technical folks and don't have capability to plan a product release or manage people. Smart engineers get the job done somehow. Features get dropped in every release due to poor planning. For experienced engineers it is not a great place. Lot of encouragement given to new college grads and for them it is a good learning experience.
Something to note - the company had no new innovation for a long time.
Benefits were very moderate compared to other companies in the Valley.
Selling their old product (vSphere) will only take them so far.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch out, the open source is coming to get your bread. You can do nothing to stop it.
