Pros

Energetic, growing rapidly, young, exciting, cutting-edge, industry leader, tons of opportunity, great collaborative culture.

Cons

Because it is growing so rapidly, internal systems and processes are not always in place. However if you see opportunity in challenges, you will succeed here.

Advice to Management

Keep the growth coming!

    Pros

VMware is a terriific company to work for if you want to work for the virtualization industry leader with a great vision.

    Cons

Work you will because there is not a very good work/life balance at VMware. While it's nice to be so busy, especially in this economy, sometimes a good employee can burn out.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

I met many interesting people in that company and learned a lot from them. Getting an insight into virtualization and using a number of technologies broadened my experience.

    Cons

Pressure for getting things done in no time, poor planning, combined with the manager's inability to be sincere, direct and unpretending and to make team members actually work as a team killed my desire to be in VMware.

    Advice to Management

VMware's Bulgarian R&D center was known as Sciant AG before the acquisition took place in 2007. While at that time Sciant was a leading employer in Bulgaria (according to Hewitt's Best Employer Study), little has remained from the spirit and morale of that time. A number of highly skilled, professional and sober-minded managers have left the company since, only to be replaced by overly ambitious yet unreasonable fast-track-career seekers. Problems are most rampant in the Quality Assurance division where managers come and go like seasons. Some time ago a decision was taken that all testing should be automated. While not bad in itself, this idea came to be implemented too badly. Sure, Java introductory programming courses were made available but people undergoing the training were expected to still perform the same amount of production work nonetheless. The result of this lack of priorities is easy to predict - suboptimal performance at both training and work, but no one seem to care, at least in the beginning. Another example raising brows is that people with as little as a-couple-of-months experience in programming were unreasonably burdened with the huge responsibility of designing and implementing entire testing frameworks from scratch with almost no help from anyone and it comes as no surprise that such attempts failed. Bulgarian managers and CEO seem to unquestioningly embrace whatever crazy idea comes from Cork or Palo Alto instead of taking care for and actually leading their people thus ensuring both employees' and the company's well-being. Rather than being visionaries and leaders, they don't dare confront their seniors and have refined their ostrich instinct to such a degree, waiting for the problems to ripen up until they can't be overlooked any more, that when things get down to the bone and action must be taken this usually means a number of skilled but highly dissatisfied employees leaving and spreading the word that this company is not worth it (which considering the current state of affairs is actually true).
