I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Clean environment. Well lighted. Environmentally controlled.

Cons

Constant overload causing people turnover. Rarely does anyone completely know what they are doing. Lots of conflict at management levels over who takes responsiblity for issues. People afraid to take on new tasks because of being in trouble for breakages easily made due to over complexity of work process and short learning time to know massive number of exceptions to watch for.. Every job is custom, very complex and long learning curves.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Express expectations before you hire people. Listen to people and believe them. Don't just let them talk and continue on with your own assumptions and aspirations. Apply training given for subordinates to use to upper management practices as well. Not dual standards.

I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice office space. Relaxed work atmosphere. Nice facility and campus.

    Cons

Many start as a contractor before going perm. The company does not know how to manage contractors as a work force seeing that they are really hired as faux employees. Management thinks very highly of itself and is hit and miss in the talent arena. This is a performing company, not an inventing company. Everything is geared towards selling insurance and business operations. The company as a whole really does not value software development and by no means is doing a good job in this area as a result. There is a very odd management deficit in this company. For being so professional looking the management is really rather unprofessional and misguided at some levels. To solve the problem, they are going to add more managers so I don't expect the problem to resolve any time soon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Outsource your software related activities to a company that excels at writing software and get out of the software business. The same goes for web site management. Implement an extensive company wide management training program. Mentor new managers. Have a 360 degree review process.
