Pros

The benefits and perks such as ski passes, discounts at restaurants and retail outfits, insurance, and flexible scheduling are definitely pros. Working on the mountain is awesome! You meet great people and its a wonderful networking opportunity to help enhance your career in the future. This is generally seen as a stepping stone for most corporate employees who don't stay much longer than a year or two, then move on to bigger better things. Management does tend to stay longer, averaging maybe 4- years up to 20 years. Great learning experience.

Cons

Everyone is despensible. Little pay for a lot of responsibility, especially in the corporate atmosphere. Management tends to be those that have been there the longest, not necessarily those most qualified. I felt like this kind of divided the teams a bit in the different departments at corporate. Also, once an employee has served a number of years and begins to make a lot of money, my experience has been that these people are very valuable, but Vail seems to find a way to fire them or lay them off.

Advice to Management

Hire managers that are actually qualified. Don't just base a management decision on tenure. Your best employee may have only been there a month, but has already shown leadership in their current role and can definitely be the best choice if a promotional opportunity became available. Value your employees. It is much less expensive to pay employees at market price and spend less on training due to high turnover than it is to send so much funding to training because you have new people in that position every few months.

    Pros

It's great to work for a resort that is able to continually put money back into the resorts.

    Cons

    Big company moves too slow.

    Advice to Management

The IT department needs a full overhaul. Projects don't move forward unless it has "Epic" in the title.
