Pros

I can't think of many these days except that there are still some very talented and wonderful people working there. If you happen to be a C level executive, the incredible payscale and 28% pay raises are a good thing.

Cons

If you are not one of the top 1%, you will have been asked (and will continue to be asked) to take pay freezes, major cuts in benefits and work harder to make up for laid off co-workers in order to pull the company out of the ditch. Given that the CEO just got a 28% raise while others are being laid off or denied promised promotions, morale has plummeted. Many of the best people have left.

Advice to Management

Holding a meeting to outline the "shared sacrifice" the employees are all going to have to make and answer any questions they have just two days before you announce your 28% pay raise is a little insulting. I'm sure after hearing that news, employees would have been able to come up with a few more questions for Mr. Schultz.

Nice place to work but lacking in challenges and competitive compensation.

    Pros

Work environment and culture: It was a fun place to work and had a lot of lateral moves to keep it interesting.

    Cons

Lack of structure in career growth, which depended on who your direct report was and if he/she were interested or motivated in helping your growth. Too many lateral move opportunities, not enough upward movement. Further, the work was easy and was no longer challenging after some time.

    Advice to Management

Mid-level management was disappointing in terms of leadership and competence; could be leaner at that level. Too many "generals" not enough soldiers or captains.

    Pros

the sales force at Valassis is very qualified. The product is good and the prices are competitive. The sales process is easy. Most of the front line management that I have interacted with are okay, though it is easy to get bogged down with the little stuff. If you have a large enough client, that might be your only job, servicing one client.

    Cons

The downside of the sales process is that after you make the sale, there is so much other work that needs to be done that it almost negates the value of making the sale. The compensation structure is not correct yet, the base pay is okay, but the commission/bonus needs to be structured in a way that a third grader can understand it.

    Advice to Management

simplify the order process. make the small sale worth while or stop asking the rep to target them
