Pros

Flexible schedule, fair compensation, great benefits, qualified colleagues, great people in the company, product works for clients if properly executed, industry leader, excellent tools (too many?)

Cons

Upper management is out of touch with associates, many poorly thought out and overly corporate initiatives while laying off quality support staff, simplification initiatives taking too long

Advice to Management

Let your associates do what you hire them to do - SELL. The more roadblocks put in the way and the more pedantic tasks, the less they are able to get done. Rather than worrying about percentages, worry about work ethic, as that is the deciding factor in sales.

  1. This could have been the job I retired from.

    Pros

It is rarely boring. There is an ever changing variety of people and tasking. Many variables in the material to be processsed makes for interesting days.

    Cons

Ever since the acquisition of ADVO, there has been a constant flow of legacy valassis associates into legacy ADVO positions, with a corresponding flow of legacy ADVO associates out the door. Valassis makes a big deal about you living by their published core values, but makes no effort to do the same.

    Advice to Management

Try promoting some legacy ADVO people into higher legacy ADVO jobs. Those people you keep running out the door actually know that business (better than you do). It is hard to grow the business when you have to spend all your time training people who don't have a clue and should.

  2. Great for work life balance, but doesn't have opportunities available for growing employees.

    Pros

Valassis has a unique culture that is hard to find in the corporate world. It's a laid back atmosphere, where employees are allowed to think for themselves. If you're looking for work/life balance, Valassis is the place to be. Their flex time is great, which I personally took advantage of and you rarely have to work overtime.

    Cons

-Little to no growth in the industry -Not a lot of new job opportunities were available to grow in -Pay not the most competitive (but relative to hrs worked-good)

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. The best solutions are found by the people who work with it every day.
