Pros

Good pay and benefits. Working with a state of the art facility and automated machinery. Good people, hourly and lower management employees all got along. Upper management was fairly open with all (with what they could pass on). Good work life balance.

Cons

Printing is slowly going away. Senior management and corporate is so focused on digital that the print side takes a hit and not enough recognition to support it. So many positions were cut that there is little to no chance of moving up. Hourly promotions was on a performance based skills test that needs (and still needs) a lot of tinkering to work. Very slow, frustrating process for them.

Advice to Management

Boost your bread and butter of the print side, it is what got you the $200+ million building. Be mindful of what the hourly people have to say, they are the ones who keep the place moving.

Nice people to work with, not a lot of opportunities for growth

    Pros

Employees seem loyal to Valpak and many of them have worked there 10+ years. Very accommodating with time off, especially with new employees. Good benefits that start on day one of employment. People seem to generally care about each other and treat each other like family.

    Cons

For someone in the early years of their career (less than 10 years out of college), there does not seem to be a lot of opportunity for growth or the ability to move between departments. Since so many employees, including most management, are "lifers" there is a lot of this-is-the-way-we've-always-done-it talk when new ideas are presented.

    Advice to Management

Don't stay content being set in your old ways; explore employees' ideas for improvements, whether it be in processes or products. Continuing to do the same thing will produce the same results.

    Pros

The people at the VMC were incredible. They built a culture of accountability, teamwork, quality, safety and collaboration.

    Cons

There is a definite difference in the culture between the Largo and the St. Pete location. Largo operates in a lot of silos with old school management mentality of do as I say and not as I do whereas St. Pete focuses more on an open leadership where everyone has a say and holds each other accountable at all levels.

    Advice to Management

Break down the barriers between the Largo and St. Pete
