I worked at Valpak Direct Marketing Systems full-time (more than an year)

Pros

You work for a small franchise office, but you have great corporate support in marketing and sales training.
You go through a month long one-on-one training program with your local manager so you are totally equipped to do the job upon completion of the training program.
Your local franchise owner will take you to the national (or international) sales training program each year, which is a lot of fun and very educational.
They have a huge marketing department that provides excellent resources to do the job.
All of the people that work there (more than a year) seem to really love the job and are really friendly.
You have a lot of freedom while doing the job. You decide which business to pursue and you manage your time in and out of the office. As long as you have good results, there isn't any micromanaging from owner/manager.
If you have difficulty with a client and want management support, you will get it immediately.

Cons

Selling to small business owners can be challenging because they 1) usually don't understand what marketing is so you have to spend a lot of time educating them before you can even get to selling them anything, 2) they don't understand the need to market their business in order to keep the doors open. 3) you have quite a few clients that go out of business and owe you money. 4) when your client doesn't pay their bills, you don't get paid. 5) when your client doesn't pay, but is still in business, the owner of the local franchise makes you personally take the business owner/client to small claims court to try to get the money they owe you.
It is sometimes difficult to get paid the money you are owed so you frequently have to argue with or threaten the owner in some way to get paid.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the income loss from non-paying clients as a business loss expense rather than not paying your sales reps for all the hard work they've put in.

    Pros

    Got to work with a lot of great people on the sales team.

    Cons

    Los Angeles office - Low salary. Low commissions. Constantly changing pay structure. They'll cut your pay in half or to zero without even telling you!! They get money from corporate if they are a franchise for new hires, so the turnover for sales reps is super high and NO STABILITY whatsoever. You are just a number to them. No positive re-enforcement from management. I heard other offices around U.S. are much better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Invest in a sales team and they will sell more and work harder. Show them they are more than just a number.

    Pros

    A paycheck is about the only positive associated with this job.

    Cons

    Valpak of Los Angeles can be easily compared to a famous fallen star Lindsey Lohan. It’s a disaster happening every day, with employees constantly crashing and burning with the highest turnover and termination rate one has ever witnessed in their life. In the short time I was employed with this company before leaving on my own terms, I observed roughly twelve co-workers get terminated. The termination is an event in itself; imagine Lindsay Lohan going to court, that’s if she shows up- you can’t help but stare and wonder what may happen next. While you are called into an office with the impression that you may be talking about accounts, billing issues or other related Valpak jargon-you discover that you are actually getting fired. What happens next is pretty common, a manager is touching and putting away all of your personal items in a box. Your co-workers are keen observers of your desk and personal items being rummaged through; they are quite aware you are being fired as they have seen this act done by managers countless times before. This surely makes for a positive and constructive work environment. Can anyone say motivation?

    Save yourself from this debacle of an organization as I wish I did. Low pay, terrible commission structure, obsolete benefits package, no time off allowed for the first year, forget about sick time, and constantly being nagged and babysat to make phone calls and simple tasks- it begins to take a toll on your motivation and self-worth. Let’s not forget, your emails will have to be proof read before sending them to prospects or current clients because clearly Valpak of Los Angeles does not believe you are competent enough to communicate with your clients. It’s a sad, pathetic excuse of a sales organization with no current CRM or Salesforce program to keep track of current business or lead generation. It is 2013, get with the program! As Valpak loves to claim, they have been in business for 45 years and doing something right to have been around for such a long time; well, how about helping your sales team with a tool that will allow them to keep track of their business in an efficient manner rather than being disappointed every time they call on a business only to find out that business is already a client with Valpak. This is a waste of time for the sales rep and essentially a loss of revenue for the wretched organization; time is money!

    Best of luck to anyone who moves forward and accepts this position. I hate to say it, but you will soon recognize for yourself. I told you so.

    Does it really matter? Seems like the terminations have been part of the norm for the past few years, why change that now?
