Vancity – “Where doing the right thing becomes a corporate mantra”

Pros

The best reasons to work for VanCity is that it's a place where you can truly feel good about your job and the impact it makes in the community. And the people were truly decent people that worked hard to be consistent in what was said and done. I felt senior management really wanted to "do the right thing" in all aspects.

Cons

When I worked there, Dave Mowat was still CEO, and I could see a growing rift between how things were done and a "work hard, play hard" culture he wanted to develop. Ultimately, I'm pleased to see that he has gone onto other things and the new CEO returned to the "decency" foundations of the company

Advice to Senior Management

Build on your strengths! People were very committed to the VanCity proposition, and loved their jobs. Revel in the fact that you don't have to make the same kind of profits of other banks - it frees you up to spend more on doing what's right.
