Pros

Excellent benefits & other perks like staff fitness center & wellness programs. Good collegial, environment where people are helpful.

Cons

Hard to know what is going on with the state of the organization, not much communication with senior leadership. Have to pay for parking & hard to leave/get off & on campus during the day

    I worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center

    Pros

    The benefits are awesome! The pay was above average for the type of position. You definitely feel a sense of pride when you tell people you work at Vandy (even if they do automatically assume you're a nurse). The chances for advancement within your department can vary. However, throughout the hospital, your choices are numerous.

    Cons

    Strictly speaking from the Materials Support departments standpoint, the phrase "You can take the man out of the Army, but you can't take the Army out of the man" rings true. To go from a Manager that embodied everything an employee would need and want (highly competent, team-centered communicator, and a positive personality) to a Manager that would go on vacation and only tell upper management, holds semiannual staff meetings (whereas their predecessor held them monthly) and sees everything in black and white, was a shock. I, and several others within the department, went through a period of grieving when we realized that our "close knit working family" was no more.
    Again, each department has its own unique dynamics. Some folks thrive more under certain managerial styles than others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    When changing managers, please consider the differences in management styles. A person can be ultra qualified, but if their people skills are in direct contrast to the current manager's (especially if the department is thriving under that manager's leadership), you are seriously risking destroying the key component to your department's overall success.
