I have been working at Vanguard full-time

Pros

The one financial firm that truly cares about and acts in the best interest of its clients. You feel as though your work is meaningful. Work/Life balance is encouraged. Benefits are above average. Most employees are genuinely nice, ethical people.

Cons

Compensation is not competitive. Employees are stretched because it's a lean organization. Leadership is slow to make decisions. High-performing employees are often not the ones rewarded with advancements.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more attentive to talent development. Many high-performing employees do not feel appreciated or adequately rewarded.

    I have been working at Vanguard

    Pros

    (This is all from the IT side perspective)
    - Encouraged to/culture of rotate/ing
    - Plenty of opportunity to do something different
    - All kinds of IT work: software, hardware, process experts, etc.
    - Easy access to senior leadership if ambitious and willing to reach out
    - Coworkers are generally friendly, except for those that have been jaded (which exists in every company)
    - Very fluid environment, ahead of or with the curve company
    - Very competent and engaged senior leadership
    - Culture is evolving
    - Politics are more or less invisible at the junior levels, increase as you go up
    - Lots of great leaders to learn from
    - Opportunity to move up exists
    - Senior leadership is always working on making the company better (infrastructure, strategic projects, HR policies, etc.)
    - Flexible workplace (as long as your role allows it) - work from home ad-hoc, email on personal phone, etc.
    - A great place for folks who are energized by change
    - Rarely have to test your moral compass against the shareholder...company has a culture of doing right by the shareholder
    - High ethics culture
    - Worklife balance is encouraged
    - Good benefits (401k match, plus quarterly savings plan, mid-year partnership, health + dental + vision, convenience services like health advocate, onsite gym and health facility, dry cleaning [overpriced], car service [overpriced], plus others)

    Cons

    (This is all from the IT side perspective)
    - Rotations into jobs are heavily driven by "business need", so you need to wait for the opportunity
    - Promos take time and there's a process
    - Lots of process to get work done
    - Lots of leadership rotations always occurring, sometimes hard to keep track
    - Personal hearsay/opinion: not convinced IT folks are paid enough
    - Have to "buy into the system/drink the juice" to blend, but to hold your own you need a mind of your own

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Work closer with the employees to discuss and communicate career options instead of "placing" employees.

    I have been working at Vanguard full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Pleasant work environment with very friendly, intelligent, and cohesive employees. Good benefits and nice area as well.

    Cons

    Low pay compared to industry standard and somewhat slow advancement process, military structured pay grade, micromanaged phone positions with very little flexibility.
