Nice place to start your career, but chances of long-term advancement are not terrific.

Pros

For a law firm its size, it has a higher than normal percentage of down to earth, good to work with people.

Cons

Very long partnership track. It is difficult to ascertain what you need to accomplish to advance. Compensation is mediocre for the market and the size of the firm.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more communicative with your associates. Try to create a legitimate and non-stigmatizing non-partnership track. There are plenty of very talented and hardworking attorneys who would be willing to work for a bit less than market if there are realistic and available flexible work arrangements that would permit some semblance of a work/life balance.

I have been working at Venable LLP full-time

    Pros

It's a nice place to work - the people are generally friendly and the benefits are good. Plus there's a lot of history at the firm and a fair amount of job security.

    Cons

Many of the attorneys like to pretend the support staff doesn't exist, like an Indian caste system. Also, there's a sense that offering up criticism of management or asking a tough question could lead to trouble and possibly getting fired. The staff shouldn't be afraid to confront the lawyers with something as innocuous as advice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Integrate the staff and the lawyers more. Listen to the support staff when they have complaints and concerns. Stop cutting benefits and start offering actual raises.
