I have been working at Verizon full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent pay, excellent benefits, health dental and vision covered fully (for now) 401k matching, commission sales allows for very large checks a few times a year, Union strong. Excellent product...FIOS

    Cons

EXTREMELY difficult to move around within the company and almost zero room for advancement...unless you are mgmt. Mgmt constantly moving from dept to dept, no cohesion and almost no cooperation between departments. Every job in every dept is sales oriented, customer issues seldom resolved, and customers very combative as result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all the managers and start over...seriously. Verizon landline customer service is so horrid that it's become the benchmark for other companies that aren't even in this industry to avoid. Your network of managers has become a buddy system far stronger than any union, corruption runs rampant, lousy managers are promoted and good ones get pushed aside until they retire.

I have been working at Verizon full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

-A lot of opportunities during the early years of a career
-A company you can be proud to say you work for
-Tuition reimbursement/In house training is exceptional

    Cons

Unfortunately in IT, this becomes a dead end job. Not a lot of movement has been happening the last few years. Unless you love what you are doing, you can experience burnout and frustration. Also, too many layoffs. Verizon is at the point where there is no more 'dead wood' to get rid of. Everyone worries about their job when a RIF is pending since anyone could be next.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to utilize employee's skills better. Although employees take advantage of training and/or get advanced degrees, those newly acquired skills are not put to use by the company. Many employees are still in the same type of job as when they were hired.
